LAUNCH: The Pop Star’s (Fashionable) Brother
By Faryal Shahzad
With an outlet adorned with photos of Atif Aslam modelling his brother’s designer wear, Shahbaz Aslam finally launches himself as a designer.
The red carpet seems to have become an integral part of flagship store launches these days. Organised solely for the eyes and ears of the media, such is the enchantment of these scarlet set-ups that our celebrities and glitterati usually spend more time being shuffled around in front of television cameras than they actually do appraising the designer creations they have so enthusiastically come to witness.
The launch of Shahbaz Aslam’s flagship outlet in Lahore this week was no exception. The brother of the pop sensation Atif Aslam, Shahbaz seemed to have done a good work with his winter prêt line for men and women, but more guests were found outside than inside the outlet, not to mention that the outlet’s ground floor was only big enough to accommodate a little over half-a-dozen people; or it might have been Atif Aslam’s presence that stole the show, as he performed the inaugural ceremony on the red carpet and darted from one television microphone to the other.
Shahbaz Aslam’s winter collection exhibited trendy pieces, with women’s line showing chic blouses, tops and sequined cardigans, in addition to elegant long coats in fur and leather. The eastern line featured two-pieces with motifs embroidered in gold and silver, adorned with stones.
Most of Shahbaz’s pieces were emblems of ‘style in simplicity’ and were done in good taste, delightfully devoid of the tawdry touch that some of our budding designers lend to their collection in an attempt to stand out or outdo their competitors. His line flaunted not only cut, but quality in terms of choice of fabric and stitching, the latter not sometimes a priority even with a lot of celebrated designer brands.
Shahbaz’s men’s line included casual shirts, two-piece suits and sweaters, besides some accessories. Though the men’s line was not very large, whatever was put to show exhibited refinement and the designer’s sensitivity towards style. Atif Aslam’s fashion shots in Shahbaz’s collection for men adorned the walls of the latter’s outlet, with Atif posing in some of his designer brother’s best creations.
While talking to Images Shahbaz revealed that he planned to expand his men’s line, so that he could provide the contemporary man with a “wide choice in wardrobe.” According to him, “this is just the beginning. I will be bringing in much more to my men’s and women’s collection and a lot is yet to come.”
Not a lot of big names from the fashion or entertainment industry were seen on the occasion. Khawar Riaz and stylist Annie of Allenora were among those attending the launch.
